Regarding the double battles AI...there are parts of the game where you have an AI partner that might want to help you out with those AI quirks.

The layers system is a nice idea. It's like putting tags on books and movies. It's a shame wild 'mons couldn't get some unique layers to give personality. Have smart pokemon prioritize supereffective hits. Have quick to anger pokemon prioritze debuff moves early into a fight and then use nothing but their strongest move until they realize it can't hit the opponent i.e. a Tauros that spams leer and glare until it takes a hit that deals 5 to 20% of its health. Then it'll swords dance or whatever buff move it has then when it hits 40% damage it'll spam Headbutt/slash or whatever until the battle ends or a ghost type comes out.

Why is Agility a Psychic move? Just have all the stat changing/status moves be normal. Easy fix. *Glares at withdraw. Why do I need water STAB on a knock-off harden? Why does the other half of gen 1 amnesia need to be dark type? Just make a move for boosting 1 stat by 1 stage, 2 stages, 2 stats by 1 stage, 2 stages, lowering one or more enemy stats by 1 or 2 stages, then make a normal type healing move. Boom. Done. Don't change the paralyze/burn/poison/freeze/sleep/confusion inflicting moves, those are fine, except that one ghost type confusion inflicting move, why isn't it psychic? Psychic literally has 2 of it's low strength attack moves inflict confusion by percentage chance.

I just always remember the biggest random BS moment of gen2 AI(kinda, more like a general fight mechanics bug) that happened to me by chance(on VC... Silver? Crystal?), and no one else ever seems to have had that experience. Picture this: You fight Karens Houndoom. Your Graveler(or was it Golem?) is on like 3 HP and you want to swap into your Lanturn. Houndoom uses Pursuit and faints Graveler. Lanturn gets sent in. Karen uses A FULL RESTORE, and only now can you choose a move again.
